PTT invites would-be cartoonists to take part in its annual comic contest

THE PETROLEUM Authority of Thailand (PTT) is celebrating the fifth year of its “PTT Comic Contest” by expanding its free workshops to the nation’s four regions.
“As usual, we are cooperating with [magazine] a day for this year’s edition. The aim is, as ever, to promote creativity and drawing skills in young people and the general public as well as raise awareness about energy conservation and effective energy use,” says Prasert Salinla-umpai, executive vice president of PTT's corporate communication & social responsibility.
“It is a stage for comic fans, to show off their abilities and perhaps even become a professional cartoonist in the future. Comics are recognised as one of the most powerful communication tools, and are a unique way to communicate, using both image and text to effectively demonstrate time, function, and emotion.
Throughout the past four years, we’ve had more than 1,500 cartoonists joining our campaign and they’ve come up with more than 2,500 works of art.”
This theme of the contest, “Energy Eureka”, underlines that energy isn’t just only about economising but also experimenting. It’s a way of blending art with science along with PTT’s research into developing renewable energy to replace decreasing petroleum stocks, which is particularly important because Thailand has to import more energy from overseas every day.
“On the occasion of this fifth year, we want to seek more new talents and help them develop their comic-drawing skills while instilling the importance of using energy worthily through our free workshop and comic camps,” Prasert says.
The free workshops get underway today in Bangkok, with the session taking place at the Bangkok Art & Culture Centre. It then moves south to the 60th Anniversary of His Majesty the King’s Accession to the Throne International Convention Centre in Songkhla on July 11 and to the Thailand Creative & Design Centre in Chiang Mai on July 18.
This year’s panel of judges is made up of "Nine Lives" author Songsin Tiewsomboon, cartoonist Suthichat Saraphaiwanit who draws the “Joe-The Sea-Cret Agent” series, Veerachai Duangpla of “Innocent” fame, Songwit Seakitikul and Chaiyaporn Panichrudthiwong as well as the pop duo Lipta.
“If you want to develop your comic skills and creativity, don’t hesitate to take part in this contest. The qualifiers will attend our comic camp for two days and work on their art with the judges,” says Changnoi Kulchorn Na Ayutaya, marketing director of a day magazine.
Applicants should submit their work in a free-form “one-page” comic that reflects the “Energy Eureka” concept. The contest is divided into two categories: high school students between the ages of 13-18 and university students and the public aged 18 and over.
There are three channels for submission of entries: uploading to www.Facebook.com/PTTComic, email to [email protected], and snail mail to 3, Soi Soonvijai 4, Bang Kapi, Huay Kwang, Bangkok 10310. The 5th PTT Comic Contest: Energy Eureka should be written clearly on the envelope.
The deadline is August 31.
The winner receives prizes worth Bt400,000, the chance to exhibit his/her works, and the opportunity to work for “a day” magazine for one year.
