GPSC wins feasibility study deal for power

Global Power Synergy Plc is pursuing its "Big Win" growth roadmap by clinching a deal with the Myanmar government to conduct a feasibility study for a 400-megawatt gas-fired combined-cycle power plant in Thanlyin.

GPSC is one of Thailand’s leading producers and distributors of electricity, steam and utilities and is PTT Group’s power flagship.

President Noppadol Pinsupa said yesterday that its consortium with Marubeni Corporation and Eden Group has signed a memorandum of understanding with representatives from the Myanmar government for the project, which aims to stabilise electricity supply particularly in the Yangon area.

Demand for electricity has been skyrocketing for both the residential and industrial markets, such as the Thilawa Special Economic Zone where PTT is bidding on a petroleum refinery improvement project.

This power plant project emphasises GPSC’s positioning as a leading power business. It will help the company to grow its business along with upstream and downstream businesses of PTT Group.

It is a part of its "Big Win" strategy focusing on large-scale projects locally and internationally. The project is expected to be operational by 2020, he said.

This opportunity is one of the important projects that GPSC has obtained rights from the Myanmar government for to study and develop.

GPSC has a couple power plants in Myanmar in its development pipeline, with total capacity expected to approach three gigawatts, ranging from clean coal-fired to natural gas combined-cycle facilities.

"GPSC is committed to developing power plants and utilities projects, both in Thailand and Asean countries, to fuel the economic development in the region and to thrive altogether," he added.
