Kra canal would damage US interests? So what?

Re: "Kra Isthmus Canal on backburner", Politics, November 9.

The article quotes the personal opinion of a high-ranking Foreign Ministry official, who said Thailand is unlikely to build the canal because it would threaten the interests of Singapore and the United States. He recommends instead linking the Pacific and Indian oceans by a 400-kilometre highway between Map Ta Phut on the Gulf of Thailand and Myanmar’s Dawei deep-sea port.
That solution, however, would cost more time and money than a canal, whose passage fees could be shared between Thailand and the major investor, China. Why do we have to look after the interests of Singapore and the US when we can secure our own by earning a lot from this project?
