People must beware of dengue fever, after rains in several regions of Thailand have spawned huge numbers of mosquitoes, Department of Disease Control (DDC) director-general Dr Suwanchai Wattanayingcharoenchai has warned.

Dengue fever has so far this year claimed 89 lives and affected 81,500 people in Thailand, the Department of Disease Control (DDC) said on Monday (September 9) as it called on members of the public to help destroy mosquito breeding grounds and also dispatched officials to fumigate several areas.

The spike in dengue fever cases in the northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima has continued to worsen, with 4,080 patients and two deaths as of July 18, making it the country’s fifth worst-hit province, Nakhon Ratchasima health office head Dr Narinrat Pitchayakamin said on Friday.

The northeastern province of Si Sa Ket on Tuesday declared that the prevention and control of dengue fever had become an issue requiring urgent attention throughout its area. Health chiefs said they were especially concerned about what will happen during the latter stages of the traditional rainy season.
